Retratos

Retratos: 2,000 Years of Latin American Portraits proves that good things are born from the union of diverse strengths. This major project brings together the work of many of Latin America’s most accomplished artists, showcasing the similarities and differences among the rich cultures of Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and the United States. At Ford Motor Company, we are proud to support a project that honors the heritage and achievements of the Hispanic community and fosters cross-cultural exchange.

This project has flourished because it was led by people and institutions that are exceptional in different ways. The team—Marion Oettinger, Jr., interim director and curator of Latin American art at the San Antonio Museum of Art; Fatima Bercht, chief curator at El Museo del Barrio; Carolyn Carr, deputy director and chief curator at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery; and Miguel Bretos, a historian with expertise in Latin America and senior scholar with the National Portrait Gallery—scoured much of the Western Hemisphere for exhibition material. We brought our resources to the table, brainstormed with the team, and together found that these different connections, creative ideas, and scholarly insights were our greatest strength.

The team has succeeded beyond all expectations, and we are thrilled to be a part of it. At Ford, we know that art is a powerful tool for education. We are certain that Retratos will be a very meaningful experience for the thousands of people engaged by the exhibition, community outreach programs, educational materials, website, and publications.
